Charmaine Abdul Karim
​My name is Charmaine Abdul Karim, and my life is a testament to the rich heritage and enduring strength of my family. I am part of the Smith family, one of the most storied Romany families in the UK, known as the Blacksmiths. My father was a pioneer and humanitarian, one of the first advocates for our people alongside remarkable individuals such as Peter Ingram, Dave Smith, Bob Williams, and Gordon Boswell. Together, they laid the blueprint for not only my path but for all British Romany people. They did so with profound respect, grace, and integrity, setting a standard that continues to inspire and guide us.
My Story
My mother, born in a horse-drawn wagon, was a fierce matriarch whose strength and dignity were a constant source of inspiration. Her life exemplified our Romany resilience, teaching us to face adversity with a warrior’s spirit and to rise above challenges with unwavering resolve. Her strength was evident not only in her words but in her daily actions and her commitment to preserving our traditions.
Our heritage runs deep, with strong bloodlines that include fortune tellers and horse dealers, whose wisdom and skills have shaped our identity. The teachings and values imparted by my parents gave me a profound understanding of our culture. They emphasized that our heritage is not just a set of customs but a living testament to our enduring spirit and resilience.
One of the most meaningful conversations I had with my father was about preserving our culture. He spoke with deep concern for the survival of our Romanipen, underscoring that our traditions are not relics but vital aspects of our identity that must be passed down. My mother’s fierce resolve complemented this vision, reinforcing that our strength lies in living our heritage with conviction.
In our community, questions like “Who are you one of?” or “Who’s your people?” are more than just inquiries—they are affirmations of our identity and belonging. Our heritage, deeply rooted in our strong bloodlines and the legacy of those who came before us, is a source of immense pride and strength.
As a mother, I am committed to ensuring that my children inherit not only our customs but also the unbreakable spirit that defines us.
